Jazz Bassist Drew Gress tours Europe and the West Coast

New York City bassist Drew Gress is one of today's busiest jazz professionals on the international scene. He recently completed a nearly one-month long tour of the U.S. West Coast and Europe with guitarist John Abercrombie and drummer-composer John Hollenbeck, with concert dates in Seattle, San Francisco, London, Nice, and several cities in Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Luxembourg. The European tour featured, in addition to Abercrombie, violinist Mark Feldman, drummers Joey Barron and Jack DeJohnette, and multi-instrumentalist John Surman.
Drew Gress is also a recognized jazz composer with a distinctive discography as a leader. His latest album, "Irrational Numbers", has been raved by the New York Times, Jazz Times, the Time Out magazine and Boston Herald, Donald Elfman calling it "the best new recording of the year." Gress, 50, was born in Trenton, New Jersey, and raised in the Philadelphia area. He attended the Baltimore Towson State University as a student in composition and counterpoint, where he established a long-time collaboration with saxophonist Ellery Eskelin, and started his recording career for Enja Records. The following years Gress joined the groups of Sonny Stitt, Clifford Jordan, Zoot Sims, Cab Calloway and pianist Marc Copland. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Gress held distinguished teaching positions at the Peabody Conservatory, Towson State University and the Baltimore School of the Arts. He was also an artist-in-residence at the University of Colorado-Boulder and the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia. In 1997, Gress cofounded the successful cooperative trio "Paraphrase" with saxophonist Tim Berne and drummer Tom Rainey, and been since recording as a leader and a sideman for several record labels. Gress has been awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts, Chamber Music America and French-American Exchange. In addition to composing for jazz groups, Gress has experimented with composition for larger ensembles and synthesizers.
